Tomato growth performance in response to Nousbo Controlled Release Fertilizer application in Philippines. Research summary

(Summary of the study of Nousbo CRF 20-7-12 effect on Tomato growth and yield performances in Philippines)

Nousbo CRF 20-7-12 is a fertilizer in the form of granules coated with material that can control the rate, pattern and duration of plant nutrient release. CRF 20-7-12 was evaluated for its efficacy as one-time application product for complete nutrient supply for Tomato from September 2018 to February 2019 in two locations in Philippines: Barangay Caurdanetaan, Umingan, Pangasinan and Barangay Bantug, Science City of Munoz, Nueva Ecja, in order to determine the effect of Nousbo CRF on the growth and yield of Tomato and to confirm the effective rate of CRF that will produce the highest yield.

The recommended rate of conventional fertilizer was applied based on soil analysis recommendation. Conventional fertilizer sources were complete fertilizer 14-14-14 and Urea 46-0-0. The recommended rate was 90-60-20kg NP2O5K2O per hectare in Barangay and 90-30-30kg NP2O5K2O per hectare in Barangay, Nueva ecija, applied as basal and top dressing. CRF 20-7-12 was applied once as basal through dibbling or per hill application. Number of marketable fruits, total weight (kg) of marketable fruits per 10 randomly selected sample plants, computed yield in tons per hectare were assessed. Results are summarized in the following table.

Yield and growth parameters of Tomato affected by various kinds of fertilizers in Barangay and Barangay, Nueva ecija

In Barangay location tomato plants applied with CRF 20-7-12 at 5 g/hill produced the highest weight of marketable fruits of 49.50 tons per hectare that translates to around 53% increase in yield compared with the yield of plants that were applied only with recommended rate of conventional fertilizer. It can be noted however, that the application of CRF 20-7-12 at 3-4 g/hill can be used economically which provided an increase of 11 to 30% over the application of conventional fertilizer. In Barangay, Nueva ecija location the trend was similar: plants treated with CRF at 5 g/hill produced the highest weight of marketable fruits of 57.07 tons per hectare that translates to around 72% increase in yield compared with the yield of plants that were applied with conventional fertilizer. Application of CRF 20-7-12 at 3-4 g/hill can be used economically which provided an increase of 30 to 50% over the application of conventional fertilizer.

Results showed the statistically significant effect of the effectiveness of CRF 20-7-12 on the yield of tomato. Highest number and heaviest weight of marketable fruits were harvested using the CRF 20-7-12 at 5g/hill applied as basal. The effect of CRF 20-7-12 was compared to the application of conventional fertilizer at the recommended rate of N-P2O5-K2O. As compared to conventional application of fertilizer, various rates of CRF 20-7-12 (3, 4, 5 g/hill, respectively) produced the higher number and weight of marketable fruits per 10 randomly selected plants per plot. Based on the results of the study, application of CRF 20-7-12 at the rate of 5 g/hill is recommended for producing the highest marketable fruit yield of tomato.
